Quake 2 Windows 7 Compatibility?

i downloaded the super awesome game Quake 2 and ran it, but the coloars are low bit and don't display correctly. normally i would figure it our on my own but i'm afraid i'm at the end of my rope. the windows compatibility troubleshooter is worthless and changed the display settings a hundred times. i googled the problem but came up with snot. can anybody help me?
